The Lens is a portal into my academic and professional world. It’s a place to visit for economic analysis, commentary on public policy, and previews of forthcoming talks and publications. Never miss an update.
I’m currently a Professor of Economics and Public Policy at Stony Brook University. I also served as chief economist (minority staff) on the U.S. Senate Budget Committee (2015/16). I don’t love politics, but I do love economic policy, and I enjoy bringing some of my D.C experiences into my writing.
When it comes to economics, my framework for analysis—my lens—is Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). For me, that means that I take inspiration from, among others, the work of economists like Wynne Godley, Hyman P. Minsky, and Abba P. Lerner. In 2020, I published The Deficit Myth: Modern Monetary Theory and the Birth of the People’s Economy. My work has also been featured in: The New York Times, Bloomberg Opinion, US News & World Reports, CNN, Foreign Affairs, The Los Angeles Times, and other outlets.
I’m working on a new book, and I’ll be using this space to feature some of my research along the way. And I’ve got some other surprises in store. Sign up to be the first to know.
